Data collected in a recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey discovered that men between the ages of 20-69 “had nearly twice the prevalence of speech-frequency hearing loss as women.”
Because exposure to noise is a leading cause of hearing loss, it’s understood that the discrepancy is attributed to the occupational and lifestyle differences between men and women. More men have military careers, or jobs in construction or industrial settings with loud equipment. And men tend to participate in more recreational activities where they’re exposed to noise, such as hunting, shooting, off-roading, or where they use power tools.
